Elmira is in Solano County, California but is named after Elmira, a town in upstate New York. It began as a major railroad stop between Fairfield and Davis but the construction of U.S. Route 40 through Vacaville all but erased its importance in the area. Much of the area around Elmira began as a farming community but has since become suburban development; Elmira still clings to its origins and is one of the few natural and undeveloped communities in the area, giving it a relaxed, unhurried small town feel.

Book an RV in Solano County and you are ready to begin exploring this part of California, but don't feel rushed. Take your time and your Elmira travel trailer rental out onto the highway, cruising slowly in whatever direction you choose to head. There are other towns that could also prove interesting to visit in your home-on-wheels. Woodland was originally conceived of and developed by Frank S. Freeman, who purchased land and then gave away lots to anyone on the condition they clear the land and build homes on their lots. Sacramento is one of the few cities that not only allows but encourage murals to be painted on public walls (and is home to the Wide Open Walls Mural Festival, held annually). Rio Vista gained international recognition in the 1980s when a humpback whale swam upstream and stayed nearby for a week, before being led back to the ocean 100 miles away. Fairfield is home to the Jelly Belly Factory and Anheuser-Busch Brewery, both of which offer tours of their facilities. Vallejo was the capital city of the state of California in 1852 and 1853. Start your exploration of this intoxicating area with your Elmira camper rental and you are off and running.

The Great Outdoors

Point Reyes National Seashore is a protected area with recreational opportunities that stretches from the ocean back into the hills. The Point Reyes lighthouse was built in 1870, as a result of the numerous shipwrecks that had occurred before (the first recorded shipwreck in the area was the San Agustin in 1595). Visitors to the area can enjoy hiking on numerous trails, explore the beach, or peek into the visitor centers. Many points in the area are handicap accessible.

Putah Creek State Wildlife Area is a nature preserve with gentle slopes and steep hillsides, and a variety of tree stands. Visitors can hike, bird watch, or view the natural animal wildlife and vegetation. Fishing is also allowed, and hunting when in season; some of the animals allowed to be hunted are deer, rabbit, wild turkey and more.

San Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve was established to study, understand, and manage the estuary, and to use the findings to help manage similar preserves elsewhere. It consists of mud flats, tidal marsh, salt ponds, and diked bay land. It is open to the public for recreational and educational purposes too. Staff at the visitor center organize and conduct education events on a weekly basis. Guests can enjoy participating in guided walks led by a staff member. The reserve is open all year round.

RV Parks

There are a number of RV parks and campgrounds around and near Elmira. Your Elmira RV trailer rental is the perfect compliment to these destinations, equalling a relaxing and enjoyable vacation.

Vineyard RV Park is situated close to many of the attractions you will want to visit, such as Napa Valley and Californian beaches. It has a clubhouse, playground, and fitness center, and a dog walking area with grass. There is a swimming pool, volleyball court, and horseshoe pits for guests to enjoy, and you can also make use of the restrooms and showers, and laundry facilities.

Midway RV Park is a quiet, family-oriented park with daily, weekly, and monthly rates. Most of the individual sites have full hookups and pull-through access, while some of them have shade; guests are welcome to use the swimming pool, picnic area, and laundry facilities. Amenities such as grocery stores are nearby and easily accessed.

Exploring The City

There is a lot to see and do in and around Elmira, beginning with the West Montrose Covered Bridge; also known as “The Kissing Bridge”, this is your chance to make your children say “Ewww”. There are several theaters where you can take in a play, and malls and antique stores that are crying out for you to visit. Elmira has several museums, including one focused on maple syrup (if you find yourself asking “why?”, then this is one attraction you must definitely visit). There are bowling alleys for when the weather turns, golf courses for when it doesn't, and city tours that include visiting the local Mennonite communities. You can also take your Elmira motorhome rental for a spin and create your own self-guided tours.

When it is time to consider where to dine, Elmira has a good selection of venues. Prices range from inexpensive to moderately priced and there is a range of cuisines to choose from, such as Chinese, Japanese and Thai, Mexican and pizzerias, and more. One local bar and grill specializes in Indian food; if you come here, be sure and try the lamb tikka masala with stuffed naan bread.

Don't forget, in the midst of all this wonderfulness, that your Elmira luxury RV rental also has a kitchen, providing an opportunity for a quiet family dinner without interruptions. Nothing says vacation like enjoying your repast in lawn chairs, gazing up at the stars.
