Duarte is a city in Los Angeles County, California, originally named Rancho Azusa de Duarte after Andres Duarte, a Mexican corporal. Several cities, such as Monrovia and Azusa, now reside on the lands owned by Duarte. In the mid-1800s, Duarte's lands were divided up and sold to settlers who came to farm and enjoy the climate. Duarte's first school was built around this time; its first two hospitals were constructed around the early 1900s. The community was fragmented for a long time but was finally incorporated in 1957, resulting in a city council and a school board. These institutions helped to focus the community, set priorities, and establish common goals. The community values its history, a fact reflected in its all-volunteer museum tracing Duarte's history from its inception to present day.

Book an RV in Los Angeles County to begin your exploration of this area, geographically, culturally and historically. There are some other towns and cities worth learning about and your Duarte motorhome rental is the perfect vehicle to get you to these destinations. Many of El Monte's earliest residents came to California searching for gold but discovering the fertile land instead. Azusa's name, according to local myth, means “everything from A to Z in the U.S.A.” and it was located on the 1926 and 1933 alignments of Route 66. Early settlers who moved to the area where Rancho Cucamonga now exists established farms growing citrus fruits, peaches, olives, and other crops, but the area is most famous for its vineyards. Yorba Linda was named after Bernardo Yorba, the first owner of the land where it resides, and after the Spanish word “Linda” (which means “beautiful”). Glendale, along with Burbank, Eagle Rock, and Highland Park, was originally the site of Rancho San Rafael, a homestead established by another Mexican corporal.

Monrovia Canyon Park is an under-developed, semi-urban area that offers hiking, camping, and picnicking opportunities to the public. The trails have outdoor restrooms at intervals and hikers can view the waterfall that flows year-round. There are drinking fountains and barbecue facilities for public use, as well as campgrounds. The site also has a nature center where staff can answer any questions you might have.

Azusa River Wilderness Park, also known as River Wilderness Park or El Encanto Trail, is just south of the Morris Reservoir. It is an easy hike and should be suitable for children or those who don't hike often. It has canyon views and looks down onto Highway 39 before descending to the San Gabriel River. Hikers will pass a waterfall along the way, although it may only be a trickle depending on the time of year.
