Dixon is a city in Solano County, California, which was incorporated in 1878. The first settlement near where Dixon now stands was Silveyville, established by Elijah S. Silvey in 1852. Silvey built and operated an inn and saloon along a well-traveled stagecoach route made famous by the California Gold Rush. By 1865, it had expanded to include a general store, post office, and a blacksmith. The arrival of the Vaca Valley Railroad upset the citizens of Silveyville when they learned that the line would not pass through their town. Instead, it crossed the property of Thomas Dickson who initiated a new settlement where downtown Dixon is located today. Settlers in Silveyville moved their homes and buildings by flat car to Dicksonville in order to be closer to the rail tracks. Dickson insisted that the community be officially named Dicksonville but the arrival of a package in 1872 was addressed to “Dixon” and the name stuck. Dickson tried for two years to have the change reversed but a county recorder in 1874 filed the new city maps under the name “Dixon”, stating that it was easier to remember.

Book an RV in Solano County and you are one step closer to exploring the majestic rolling hills of northern California. There are some other towns and cities worth exploring too, such as Dunnigan, which was originally named Antelope by two early settlers, J. S. Copp and Jolin Wilson, but later changed to Dunnigan after A.W. Dunnigan, who opened an inn under his last name. Roseville was originally named “Grinders” (for unknown reasons), then “Junction” when the railroad arrived in 1864, “Roseville Junction” after that and finally “Roseville” when the city was incorporated in 1909. Lodi produced much of the San Joaquin County wheat crop in 1880, which at 3.4 million bushels, was the largest in the world. Antioch, in addition to the Californian city, is the name of eleven other cities also located in the United States. Yountville is thought by many to be Napa Valley's culinary heart and was the location of Napa Valley's first planted grapevines. Renting a Dixon motorhome rental is how you will be able to see these places and anything else you desire.

Discover Dixon

The Great Outdoors

Lake Berryessa is a reservoir and part of a wildlife reserve and nature reclamation project. Visitors to the area can enjoy hiking and mountain biking, kayaking, canoeing or paddleboarding, or more. There are pit toilets located intermittently throughout and fishing and hunting are allowed with the proper licenses. The park has a visitor center that can answer your questions about the geography, animal life, and recreational opportunities (bird and animal observation are also popular activities within the region). Keep your Dixon travel trailer rental nearby for a post-activity coffee and refrigeration for those fish you're going to bag.

Grizzly Island Wildlife Area is a barebones wildlife observation refuge that provides recreational opportunities to the public, such as fishing and nature tours. Hunting for tule elk, rabbits, and some bird species like dove and pheasant is allowed in season; hikers and photographers have a chance to observe the resident wildlife and the marsh that accommodates and supports them. Your Dixon camper rental is the perfect photography blind from which to capture those shots.

Sacramento Valley National Cemetery is one of seven national cemeteries in the state of California. It was opened in 2006 and received its formal dedication in 2007; burial within the cemetery is restricted to armed forces personnel who have served their country honorably and their immediate families. The graveyard has a memorial pathway that passes nine separate memorials honoring the soldiers buried there.

RV Parks

There are numerous RV parks and campgrounds within a short distance of Dixon; some of these may have long-term residents. Your Dixon RV trailer rental is all you need to turn any of these destinations into your perfect short-term summer home.

Dixon May Fair Campground is an RV park charging by the day; it has big rig access and recreational trails where guests can hike or go cycling. Some of the sites have full hookups.

Midway RV Park is an older park with trees providing plenty of shade. There are restrooms and showers, laundry facilities, and recreational trails for stretching your legs or jumping on the bike. Children can enjoy the playground and swimming pool, and the park is pet-friendly. Some sites have pull through and big rig access, most have full hookups.

Exploring The City

There is a lot to do in Dixon, for both families and adults without kids. This being California, Dixon has a number of interesting farms to visit, including one that specializes in bees and also functions as a museum of sorts. The bountiful number of flower species adds to the attraction. Another farm focuses on olive oil and there is, of course, a farmers market where visitors can browse at their leisure. One of the museums focuses on raptors and is a refuge for injured birds who need to recover.

Dixon is home to a variety of restaurants ranging in price from inexpensive to moderately priced and the scene includes several different cuisine styles, such as Mexican, Italian, Indian, and much more. One Chinese establishment offers a seafood stir-fry; vegetarians can opt for the braised tofu and vegetable stir fry if they wish. There are a variety of commercial chain restaurants that children will enjoy.

Those who are as much in search of quiet as sustenance have the option of bringing home takeout but don't forget your Dixon luxury RV rental's built-in kitchen where you can prepare a meal to your liking. And who knows your preferences better than you? A delicious meal, lawn chairs set up under a star-filled west coast sky, and your traveling companions. It doesn't get better than this.
