A true town within a town, the tiny community of Chinese Camp is located in Tuolumne County in California. This charming enclave is known for its aesthetic beauty in the green foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, as well as its incredible history.

Chinese Camp represents the last vestiges of an old and prosperous mining camp established in the middle of the 19th century. Originally known as Camp Washington or Washingtonville, the name was later changed to reflect the heavily Chinese population once the Asian immigrants started gravitating towards the settlement.

Now, there is just small population of residents living in the old town and it exists as more of a living testament to its former glory as one of the region's most important and luxurious mining towns. Several buildings in town were made in the Chinese-pagoda style, so the peaceful village is a strange and unique place to see, to say the least. When you book an RV in Chinese Camp, there is no telling what sort of adventures you will find for yourself.

Outdoors Adventures

Chinese Camp lies to the east of places like Modesto and Stockton in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, on the cusp of wild natural beauty and unbeatable recreational excitement. The town itself is caught between two nearby lakes that double as recreation hotspots. New Melones Lake is north of Chinese Camp and is a suitable place to camp out with your Chinese Camp camper rental at one of two recreation areas. Tuttletown Recreation Area and Glory Hole Recreation Area sit beside the lake offering delightful lakefront camping. In the summertime, the lake is home to swimming, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, motorboating, wakeboarding, jet skiing, wave running, fishing, hiking, and mountain biking. There is an excellent interpretive center at Tuttletown that seeks to educate visitors about the natural history of the New Melones Lake area.

Don Pedro Reservoir to the south is much of the same, with the 7,000-acre Red Hills Recreation Management Area on its shores. The lake is a great place to view wildlife, go fishing, or take a dip in the refreshing waters during the hot, Mediterranean summers. Hunting is also popular in the management area, but sadly there are no official designated campgrounds for you to use with the Chinese Camp RV rental.

The Sierra Nevada Mountains have long been one of California's defining features, drawing millions of outdoor enthusiasts to the Golden State each year. A slew of wonderful national forests and parks occupy most of the mountains, making for some excellent recreation and camping. You can bring your Chinese Camp camper rental to any number of national forests, like Stanislaus National Forest, which happens to be the closest to the small village. The forest was formally established in 1897, making it one of the nation’s oldest. There are dozens of lakes to explore, hundreds of miles of streams and rivers to canoe and fish in, and thousands of miles of trails to hike, drive, horseback ride, or mountain bike when you arrive in your Chinese Camp motorhome rental. Two ski resorts operate out of the national forest, further adding to its reputation for fun and excitement.

Yosemite National Park cannot be forgotten when you rent an RV in nearby Chinese Camp, as it is already one of the state’s biggest attractions. Those that rent an RV in Chinese Camp have the good fortune of being only a few miles from the western entrance of the majestic national park that is known to bring in millions of people each year. The spectacular waterfalls, elegant peaks, divine hiking trails, and unbelievable rock-climbing routes are responsible for the parks worldwide appeal. City Sightseeing

It might be misleading to say that Chinese Camp has attractions because the whole village is an attraction itself. This ghost town was once one of the most prosperous mining camps in all of California, with thousands of Chinese miners and prospectors calling it home. The town is a historical landmark worthy of a visit as it shows the true multicultural spirit of the Old West. The Veterans Memorial Hall & Military Museum is a treasure trove of history, with a vast array of artifacts, weapons, uniforms, and other cool items from the military. There are rare items on display, and exhibits with information on every major conflict the US military has ever fought in.

Tuolumne County Museum, in nearby Sonora, is a magnificent resource for those wanting to enrich their minds and learn a thing or two about the county’s history. The museum particularly focuses on the Gold Rush era, with lots of old prospecting items to see. The nearby casino could be nice for a change of pace when you rent an RV and just want to try your hand at winning some money.
