Camptonville is located off Highway 49 between Downieville and Nevada City in northeastern Yuba County, California. Book an RV in Camptonville if you’re seeking a small rural town set in the heart of the Gold Country with ocean beaches and mountain skiing only a few hours away. Yuba County’s border is also just 30 minutes north of the State Capitol in Sacramento.

Camptonville sits on a ridge between the North Fork and Middle Fork of the Yuba River, not far from New Bullards Bar Dam Reservoir. When gold was discovered here in 1850, the place became known as Gold Ridge. When the first post office opened in 1854, the name was changed to Camptonville to honor the town blacksmith, Robert Campton.

The Great Outdoors

Yuba County is known for being California’s gateway to the historic Mother Lode Country, with a diverse landscape of beautiful rivers, farmland, and numerous outdoor recreational opportunities that extend into the Sierra foothills.

When you hit the road in a luxury RV rental from Camptonville you’ll come across many trailheads, river access points, and charming gold rush towns to explore along the length of Highway 49, which travels through the Gold Country, passing the magnificent Tahoe National Forest, north through Yuba County and then east following the North Yuba River through Sierra County.

In the foothills of Yuba County discover abundant recreational activities including boating, camping, and fishing. Bullards Bar Reservoir is the fifth largest curvature dam in the United States and one of the most popular water sport lakes in Northern California. There are more than 60 miles of shoreline to explore, and trails can be accessed from several different trailheads. Or, stop by the Emerald Cove General Store for everything from tackle and bait to watersport gear and rentals, and spend a day on the water fishing, wakeboarding, water skiing, tubing, or swimming. When you rent an RV, here you’re only a short drive to Collins Lake, Lake Francis and over 25,000 acres of wildlife area that includes National Forest Land.

RV Parks

You’ll find many RV campgrounds in this area to park your motorhome rental near Camptonville. If you’d like easy access to Bullard’s Bar Reservoir, you might want to consider Schoolhouse Campground in Camptonville. The Campgrounds at Bullards Bar don’t offer hookup or wastewater dumping facilities, but all sites at Schoolhouse are RV accessible, just be aware the parking pads vary in size. There is drinking water and restrooms available, and the 0.7-mile long Schoolhouse Trail can be found here.

If you’d like to spend a night or two under the stars in Tahoe National Forest, Salmon Creek Campground is a shaded creekside campground providing only basic amenities including a picnic table and campfire ring at every site. This is a good spot for close access to historic towns and nearby scenic attractions like Lakes Basin, plus over 30 miles of trails are only a short distance away.

Exploring the City

When you rent an RV in Camptonville, you’ll encounter numerous local events and year-round festivals and fairs throughout the region. If you’d like to balance the experience of small remote towns with larger urban settings, Chico, Sacramento, and Davis are all within an hour's drive from Yuba County.

Camptonville was a significant community in the California Gold Rush era and a bustling stopping point for travelers and freight haulers on the route between Marysville and Downieville along Henness Pass Road, a major route over the Sierra Nevada in the 1800s. Today the main drag of Camptonville stretches about two blocks. The once-booming Gold Rush town includes the Lost Nugget gas station and convenience store, a post office, a monument to the Pelton wheel (the inventor of which lived here in the 1860s), and the original Mayo Saloon, which is currently home to a quirky restaurant and bar called Burgee Dave's at the Mayo.

Located 36 miles northeast of Camptonville is historic Marysville, the heart of Yuba County, which is framed up on two sides by the Yuba and Feather Rivers. A short walk or drive from downtown Marysville you will find boating, picnicking, several soccer fields and motocross tracks at the vast Riverfront Park. If you’re a fan of live music, head south of Marysville in your Camptonville travel trailer rental to find the Toyota Amphitheater, a state-of-the-art venue for outdoor concerts.

Much of this region thrives from agricultural businesses. As you travel along Highways 70 and 20 through the northern stretch of Yuba County, keep an eye out for signs advertising fruit and vegetable stands, where you can fuel up for an adventurous day by sampling fresh produce that grows from the region's rich soil.
