In northern Napa Valley just outside of Santa Rosa and a two-hour drive west of Sacramento is the charming town of Calistoga, California. Once home to the Wappo indigenous people, Calistoga was purchased by a man named Samuel Brannan who was coincidentally California’s first millionaire. Brannan established the state’s first English language newspaper and made a fortune off the gold rush. In a desire to create a West Coast version of Saratoga Springs in California, Brannan purchased thousands of acres to build his own resort town in northern Napa Valley. The name of the town is a mixture of California and Saratoga for this reason. To solidify the town’s reputation, Brannan ensured a railway was built to link his town with San Francisco, ensuring that it would be a popular destination as well as a vital hub for transportation.

Calistoga now makes much of its money on tourism, with countless people arriving in town each year to sample wine, soak in natural hot springs, and enjoy the peaceful town. With lots of nearby forests and parks and several of the country’s largest cities, Calistoga quietly establishes itself as one of the best possible places to rent an RV in the state of California.

Outdoors Adventures

Without a doubt, California is home to some of the most intoxicatingly beautiful natural places in the country, which is in large part responsible for its excellent tourism numbers. When you book an RV in Calistoga, you’ll realize almost instantly how right your choice was. Bothe-Napa Valley State Park is minutes outside the small town of Calistoga and is one of the smaller state parks you can visit. It has a collection of coastal redwood trees despite being so far inland. You have your standard hiking trails weaving their way through the forests at Bothe-Napa Valley State Park, in addition to a swimming pool and a campground when you can stay overnight with your Calistoga camper rental.

Robert Louis Stevenson State Park, named for the legendary author, is located north of town in the opposite direction. This state park is significantly larger than Bothe-Napa Valley State Park and is home to Mount Saint Helena. Guests can summit the mountain and see panoramic views from the top. San Francisco and the Pacific Ocean are even visible on sunny, clear days. You can even see the cabin of Robert Louis Stevenson and a monument to the author when you bring your Calistoga RV rental to check the park out.

Salt Point State Park is out on the iconic coasts of California, but it might take you a couple of hours to drive your Calistoga motorhome rental there. A wealth of wildlife thrives both on the rocky coastline of the park as well as beneath the waves in fascinating tidal pools and unique sea grottos. You can explore both the water and the land at this fabulous state park by hiking to secluded sea coves, enjoying the views from high atop the rocky bluffs overlooking the ocean, or scuba diving to see marine life in action. There are a few campgrounds on site, so guests can stay a few nights when they rent an RV and visit.

If you drive a few hours north of Calistoga, you can bring your Calistoga camper rental to the massive Mendocino National Forest, a sublime nature experience to say the least. Almost a million acres of gorgeous forest and untouched wilderness comprise the park, with lots of lakes and campgrounds peppered in too. Backpacking and hiking over the Sanhedrin Mountains in search of peace and quiet is one of the ways to explore the expansive forest, or you can simply camp out and enjoy Clear Lake to the south. No matter what you decide, California will find a way to enchant and impress even the most hardcore outdoor enthusiasts.

RV Parks to Visit

Finding a park to camp at when you rent an RV in Calistoga is nothing to lose sleep over. Calistoga RV Park comes to mind as a place to stay in the heart of town, only a few minutes’ walk from several local restaurants and wineries. Lazy-S Ranch is available for long-term rental and nightly stays and has large spacious campsites that can accommodate the largest recreational vehicles.

Cloverdale/Healdsburg KOA has its own pool, sauna, hot tub, mini golf course, and ample space to fish in the Russian River. If you still want to keep looking, check out one of the many state parks nearby, like Robert Louis Stevenson State Park for some bare-bones camping in the incredible California wilderness.

City Sightseeing

Napa Valley is home to a thriving wine industry so the rolling vineyards and elegant chateaus of Calistoga are, by far, what it is most well known for. Castello di Amorosa is a castle you can visit, surrounded by vineyards with world-class grapes. Chateau Montelena is an ivy-covered chateau that can be toured, with lots of different wines to taste. Additionally, there are plenty of wineries and tasting rooms in town as well as a few breweries for those that enjoy beer more than wine.

The other prominent feature in Calistoga is, of course, its natural hot springs. The town is packed with hot springs, although most are owned by spa retreats. Treat yourself to a lavish vacation and bathe in the healing waters of these geothermal springs.

Safari West is an action-packed adventure waiting to happen, with hundreds of exotic animals from Africa. You can tour the facilities with a trained tour guide in a safe vehicle and snap some pictures of incredible animals in wide-open habitats.
