The small, desert town of Boron is found in the state of California between Barstow and Bakersfield along the Barstow-Bakersfield Highway. The town is named for the element boron, which is mined in the town at one of the world’s largest open pit mining operations along with boronic acid. Boron was mostly an empty space until 1913 when boron, borax, and colemanite were first discovered.

It might not be the most conventional place to rent an RV and take a vacation, but when you do book an RV in Boron, you’ll be shocked at how interesting the hinterland community in the middle of nowhere really is. Glorious nature preserves, desert parks, and national forests can be found within 100 miles in any direction, and both Las Vegas and Los Angeles are accessible when you rent an RV in Boron, CA. It is truly difficult to fully explain the appeal of the town unless you visit and see for yourself what makes this mining town tick.

Experience the Sites and Scenery

Southern California is among the most beautiful places in the entire country, whether you find yourself on the picturesque Pacific coast, or high atop the Sierra Nevada Mountain peaks, and when you rent an RV in the area, you have total control over where you can go and what forests and parks you can see. Red Rock Canyon State Park is a prime example of California’s beauty not far from the town of Boron. The park has been used as a filming location for countless Hollywood productions like Planet of the Apes and Jurassic Park due to its breathtaking landscapes and otherworldly geological formations. Guests can hike through two ecological preserves and several wilderness areas while at the park or even camp out underneath the stars with the Boron camper rental. Speaking of the stars, the night skies at this desert park are quite literally out-of-this-world, a true spectacle to behold if you get to see the cosmos in all of its glory with your own eyes.

Angeles National Forest is located to the south in between Boron and the city of Los Angeles, with the imposing peaks of the San Gabriel Mountains rising high above the horizon. The land at Angeles National Forest holds several distinct types of ecosystems and a large variety of wildlife. Aside from the many wilderness areas within the forest boundaries, there are too many campgrounds to name, most of which are suitable for you and your Boron RV rental by owner.

California is home to some of the best national parks in the United States, several of which are fairly easy to find when you rent an RV in Boron with the intention of taking a road trip. Death Valley National Park is located north of Boron and is famous for its Martian landscapes and wide-open salt flats. Death Valley is known for having some of the most extreme temperatures on Earth, frequently getting above 120 degrees. The park is made of ancient rock formations from almost two billion years ago and lots of petroglyphs and fossils can be found at the park.

Sequoia National Park is a brilliant park, with fewer desert landscapes and more mountainous forests. This enchanting forest is home to the mighty sequoias, some of the most massive trees on the planet. The General Sherman Tree, in particular, is the largest tree on Earth. Much of the park is old-growth virgin forest untouched by humans and much older than any building on the planet. There are several places to camp in and around the park with your Boron motorhome rental should you decide to stay more than a day or two.

Where to Park It

Boron doesn’t have many campgrounds for you to utilize while in town, but there are some in the area that will do just fine. Red Rock Canyon State Park mentioned before and Grass Valley Wilderness Area both have campgrounds that are suitable for you and your Boron motorhome rental. These state-maintained camping sites are tranquil spots in the middle of the desert.

Silver Saddle Ranch and Club is a large ranch resort with its own lodging and campground. Guests can saddle up and live like a cowboy from the Old West at Silver Saddle Ranch and Club. Finally, Barstow to the east has some nice campgrounds nearby, like Barstow/Calico KOA. The campground has a pool, a snack bar, bicycle rentals, shuttle buses, and spacious sites for you to use.

City Attractions

Boron is a tiny village with no more than a few thousand people, but don’t let that fool you. The town is home to several interesting museums and attractions. The Borax Mine found deep in the Mojave Desert is located in Boron and there is a visitor center where people may learn about the operation, what borax and boric acid are used for, and much more. You can even take a tour of the facilities and see the gigantic man-made canyon for yourself.

The Twenty Mule Team Museum pays homage to a particular time in history when 20 mule teams were used to transport borax across the harsh desert landscapes. This museum has much more than the history of mining though, with lots of historical exhibits painting a picture of Southern California’s past. The Colonel P. Saxon Aerospace Museum has an incredible collection of antique aircraft on display that people can look at and observe up close. The location was chosen due to the nearby Edwards Air Force Base and the NASA Dryden Flight Center.
