About 25 miles to the east of Bonsall is the Hellhole Canyon Preserve near Valley Center, CA. At just shy of 2,000 acres, the preserve offers just over 13 miles of trails at varying difficulties. However, each trail will reward you with landscapes made up of rare chaparral landscapes and low-lying mountains.

Just under an hour's drive east of Bonsall is the Palomar Mountain State Park in Palomar Mountain, CA. A great excursion for some mountain hiking, you can hike along the mountain trails for views all the way to the Pacific. Sounds unbelievable, right? With an average elevation of 5,000 feet, it almost feels as though you can see as far as the weather will allow you.

Just to the south of Palomar Mountain State Park is the Cleveland National Forest in Riverside County. You can hike through the pine forests, stroll through the chaparral plains, and even hike along a section of the Pacific Crest Trail. Or if you’d rather, you can try your hand at some of the incline-gaining trails that lead up to waterfalls or panoramic vistas of the forest below.

At the California Surf Museum, you can learn about the history of this fascinating Polynesian sport and how it came to the mainland. The museum is located in Oceanside, about 15 miles southwest of Bonsall. You can learn about how surfboards have changed over the years, see historic photographs, and learn more from some rotating exhibits.
