Named after the mountain that rises to its west, Ben Lomond is a small town with a rich Scottish heritage. It was a Scot, John Burns, who named the mountain after one in his homeland and established himself as one of the first winemakers in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Sprawling along the San Lorenzo River, Ben Lomond was an early hub of Santa Cruz’s logging and lumber industry, with the community originally known as Pacific Mills. It wasn’t until 1887 when a post office was opened that the residents opted to change the name in honor of the nearby mountain. Today the town’s railroad history and surrounding redwood forests make it a popular place to rent an RV and explore.

Discover Ben Lomond

The Great Outdoors

A short drive from the center of town takes you to the Loch Lomond Recreation Area, which encompasses a picturesque lake surrounded by walking trails. It’s regularly stocked with fish to keep anglers entertained and there are boat rentals of motorized and non-motorized vessels if you want to explore the water at your leisure. If you’re not feeling so active, you can just settle in at one of the barbecue or picnic areas that line the shores.

Head in the other direction and you’ll arrive at the Fall Creek Unit, which forms part of the Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. Numerous trails traverse the rugged canyon that’s home to redwoods and Douglas firs, with plenty of unbridged streams to cross for adventure seekers. In addition, the park features the remains of lime kilns, wood stacks, and a quarry that are a testament to the lime and logging industries that operated in the area during the late-19th and early-20th centuries.

Pick up your camper rental in Ben Lomond and drive north to the Big Basin Redwoods State Park, a designated California Historical Landmark, and its oldest state park. It’s renowned for having the largest continuous stand of ancient coastal redwoods south of San Francisco, with plenty of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails to explore. You can follow the famous Skyline-to-the-Sea Trail that extends to the shores of Waddell Beach or have your binoculars ready to spot Steller’s jays and acorn woodpeckers in the oak and Douglas fir forests.

RV Parks

You can book an RV in Ben Lomond and head to the Smithwoods RV Park in Felton whose full-service sites nestle below towering redwoods. There’s a heated swimming pool, basketball court, and billiard table, as well as laundry facilities where you can catch up on your washing.

Alternatively, drive your motorhome rental in Ben Lomond north to the Redwood Resort RV Park, which offers full hookup RV sites surrounded by grassy lawns. Cool off in the swimming pool or take advantage of the complimentary internet and cable television, with cats (but no dogs) welcome to stay.

If you’re looking to book an RV rental near Ben Lomond, you can also drive south to the Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort, which has a forested setting on the San Lorenzo River and features a recreation room that’s equipped with a pool table and piano. Also nearby is the Cotillion Gardens RV Park whose more than 80 RV sites are complemented by a heated swimming pool and children’s playground.

Ben Lomond is home to a small supermarket where you can stock up on supplies and a gas station if you need to fill up your RV, together with a few eateries for dining out. It’s just 20 minutes’ drive from the city of Santa Cruz, which offers a more extensive range of services, or a 45-minute drive to the Walmart in San Jose where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Gain an insight into the industrial heritage of the San Lorenzo Valley at the small museum in Boulder Creek, which occupies the 1906 Grace Episcopal Church. It features logging and railway artifacts dating back to the 19th century, as well as exhibits relating to domestic life in the towns and villages. Many of the nearby settlements are dotted with antique stores and galleries to explore, together with local wineries where you can while away an afternoon.

Another way to experience the region is on the Roaring Camp Railroad whose historic narrow gauge trains journey up the mountains or down to the beach in Santa Cruz. Enjoy the nostalgic journey over trestles and through towering redwood groves up to the summit of Bear Mountain while listening to a narrated history of Roaring Camp. During the 1880s, steam locomotives were used to haul giant redwood logs out of the mountains, with Roaring Camp's steam engines among the oldest and most authentically preserved in America.

You can also ride the Roaring Camp Railroad down to Santa Cruz for a day at the beach, with plenty of restaurants and amusement rides to keep young and old visitors entertained. Discover the history of surfing in the United States at the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum, which is housed within the Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse, or take in the coastal views from West Cliff Drive. The coastline around Santa Cruz is also renowned for its marine life, with sea lions and birds often spotted around the rock formations of Natural Bridges State Beach.

Whether you’re visiting Santa Cruz County to explore its redwood forests or logging history, find the best RV rental in Ben Lomond and start exploring.
