In the heart of central California almost equidistant from both Los Angeles and San Francisco, Avenal is one of the largest cities in Kings County. The city was named hundreds of years ago by Spanish soldiers who noticed the endless seas of oats in the Kettleman Plains. “Avenal” means oat field in Spanish, an appropriate name for a soon-to-be agricultural community. Since the mid-19th century, this agricultural community has produced large amounts of food, but after the discovery of oil in the 20th century, Avenal rapidly grew into a prosperous boomtown with a quickly climbing population.

Avenal was not formally incorporated until 1979, but it has remained a tight-knit community since it was first founded over 150 years ago. This highly accessible town can be found on Interstate 5 and takes pride in its centralized location. Most of the major cities in California are quick and easy to reach when you book an RV Avenal, one of the many reasons why it has slowly become a tourism destination. No matter where you rent an RV in California, you are bound to be right around the corner from some sort of exceptional eco-reserve, park, forest, or beach.

Discover Avenal

The Great Outdoors

When planning your trip to Avenal, you'll discover endless parks and recreation areas to consider for your itinerary and driving route. Depending on the direction you head first after picking up your Avenal camper rental, you will see some amazing sights in California’s many regions. Driving west towards the coast, you can make a small stop at San Antonio Recreation Area on the edges of Lake San Antonio. Hiking, swimming, fishing, boating, and waterskiing are all possible when you arrive at this lakeside paradise, and there is plenty of space to camp out with your Avenal RV rental by owner. Impressive wildlife can be spotted in, around, and over the human-made lake, like stoic bald eagles circling high above.

If you continue out to the Pacific Ocean to see some of California’s iconic coastline, be sure to check out Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. This 1,000-acre gem has been lovingly referred to as “mini-Yosemite” for its resemblance to the world-famous national park in eastern California. Rugged canyons, majestic redwood groves, and stunning views of the ocean make Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park one of the most popular places to visit in all of California. There is a vast network of hiking trails connecting the park, as well as a massive hotel lodge, and a campground for those who have chosen to rent an RV.

If you're hoping for a glimpse of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, you can head to the east. You won’t be disappointed when you explore this mountain range with your Avenal motorhome rental, as there is an endless number of forests and parks blanketing the mountainous region. Sequoia National Forest, Sequoia National Park, and Kings Canyon National Park are a few hours’ drive from Avenal and are some of the most widely visited parks in the country. Kings Canyon National Park is home to Kings Canyon, a glacial groove carved into the earth, over a mile deep. This stunning chasm rivals the Grand Canyon itself in terms of awe-inspiring views, and there are plenty of hiking trails, campgrounds, and other reasons to stay a few days. Sequoia National Park is famous for its mighty sequoia trees that rank among the largest on the planet. The park was established in 1890, making it one of the oldest parks in America, and there are plenty of reasons to take a trip to this lovely park. Mount Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous United States, can be found within the park limits, further adding to the beauty, fun, and mystique.

RV Parks

Avenal doesn’t have many camping options near town, but it won’t take long to reach a few parks and campgrounds with your Avenal motorhome rental when you seek a place to sleep for the night. Sun and Fun Campground can be found east of town and offers lots of amenities including a pool, a hot tub, laundry facilities, and a playground for children.

Riverland RV Resort has a variety of amenities and activities for guests, like basketball and volleyball courts, a swimming pool, a hot tub, a hiking trail system, and an on-site bar and grill.

Visalia/Sequoia National Park KOA is closer to the national parks and forests mentioned above, so you can get close to the mountains while enjoying some amenities. This park has a dog walking area and is pet-friendly. There is also a pool and a snack bar on site so you can rest assured knowing you won’t have to cook for yourself while you stay.

City Attractions

Avenal is known for its location and history, but it isn't home to a wide variety of attractions and museums. However, there are plenty of wonderful businesses, restaurants, bars, and shops, and a few historic buildings too. The Avenal Theater is a gorgeous old movie house that has since been restored to its former glory after years of disuse. There are two screens that still show movies in the theater, as well as a banquet hall that is available for rent.

The Avenal Historical Society & Museum has a wealth of information. This fabulous small-town museum might not be large, but it sure is packed with excellent exhibits, locally produced artifacts and items, and lots of other interesting photographs documenting the town’s past.

If you hunger for more excitement, a trip to Hanford or Fresno can go a long way towards helping you find some regional attractions and points of interest. The Fresno Chaffee Zoo is a lovely place to visit if you enjoy learning about exotic animals while watching them eat, sleep, and play. The African Park has amazing animals that you would see on a safari in sub-Saharan Africa, like lions, tigers, giraffes, and zebras.
