In Northern California across the San Pablo Bay from San Francisco, is the small city of American Canyon. This uniquely named town was formerly known as Napa Junction for its positioning alongside the Napa River but was later changed to its current name. There is a lovely sign that welcomes visitors into town that claims that American Canyon is “the Gateway to Napa Valley”, and it is an outstanding place to rent an RV and tour in its own right.

Although American Canyon was only incorporated in 1992, there have been people living in the area for ages. The city is conveniently located about an hour's drive away from both San Francisco and Sacramento, the state capital of California, making it an excellent jumping off point for road tripping. The warm Mediterranean climate ensures year-round comfort and some of the world’s best wine too. Green parks, bike trails, and rolling vineyard hills dotted with grapevines bring this incredible little community to life and when you book an RV in American Canyon, there is much to discover.

Outdoors Adventures

When people decide to rent an RV in American Canyon, it becomes exceedingly clear just how divine the area and region are with respects to the great outdoors. Northern California is known the world over for its majestic redwood trees, its rocky coastlines, and towering mountain ranges, all of which are within driving distance when you take your American Canyon camper rental for a trip. A fine place to start your trip and get a feel for the area is San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge on the water’s edge south of town. This vast collection of tidal marsh, mud flats, estuaries, and beaches is the perfect place to see a variety of migratory birds enjoying some rest and relaxation during their travels. Birdwatchers from all over the western United States and beyond venture to this park throughout the year to observe these birds and try to identify and catalog as many as they possibly can.

Trione-Annadel State Park, to the northwest by Santa Rosa, is a gorgeous park once occupied by the Pomo and Wappo indigenous people. Undisturbed oak woodlands and manzanita groves decorate the hiking paths of this splendid nature area and a myriad of interesting minerals and rocks can be seen at the park, particularly obsidian due to the volcanic origins of the area’s geological features. There are miles and miles of trails for walking, hiking, and cycling, but sadly there are no campgrounds to accommodate you and your American Canyon RV rental by owner.

Another option to add to your itinerary when you rent an RV is Mendocino National Forest. This sprawling forest is found a few hours north of American Canyon with almost one million acres of Douglas-fir, white fir, madrones, ponderosa pine, and redwood trees. The Sanhedrin Mountains loom large above the surrounding area, with impressive views of large wilderness areas and hidden lakes. You can find a number of places to camp while visiting with your American Canyon motorhome rental.

If you feel like witnessing the intoxicating beauty of northern California's coastlines along the Pacific Ocean, head west to Point Reyes National Seashore, a massive nature reserve north of San Francisco. This unbelievable natural area is full of ancient forest never disturbed by human development and epic hikes to secret waterfalls and coastal campgrounds. The sandy beaches are a perfect place to camp beneath the stars and wake up to the salty sea breeze. All this and more is possible when you rent an RV in American Canyon.

RV Parks to Visit

There is no shortage of places to camp or park overnight when you book an RV rental near American Canyon or Napa Valley. The nearby casino is a great place to unwind and try your luck at some card games or slot machines. It may be a small casino, but the games are fun and the variety is there too.
