The city of Albany is located on the San Francisco Bay between Richmond and Oakland along Interstate 80. The story of how the city began is quite entertaining, starting with an armed group of local women who lived in the neighborhoods on Berkeley’s waterfront. The women grabbed a bunch of shotguns to stop carriages full of garbage from dumping their trash from Berkeley on their beloved coastal area. From that point on, the women of this neighborhood sought to create their own town and formally incorporated as Ocean View. It would later be changed to Albany in honor of Albany, New York to differentiate from the Ocean View neighborhood of Berkeley.

Albany, California, now refers to itself as the “Urban Village by the Bay”, which adequately describes the town. With a lovely small-town feel mixed the conveniences of urbanization, there is much to do in Albany, making it a great place to consider vacationing. When you book an RV in Albany, you can explore the California coastline with ease, just as you can venture off to the Sierra Nevada Mountains out east or simply stay put in the Bay Area which is home to several major cities. The best time of year to see Albany put its best foot forward is during the Solano Avenue Stroll held each September. This incredible street festival claims to be the largest block party in the world with hundreds of thousands of attendees joining in on the mouthwatering food and fun.

Outdoors Adventures

The San Francisco Bay Area is home to incredible wildlife sanctuaries, conservation lands, and public parks in an effort to preserve the beauty of the community. Siesta Valley Recreation Area is a short drive east through Berkeley and one of the closest places to get out into nature with your Albany camper rental. The hills at Siesta Valley overlook the bay for some pretty stunning views and even better hiking. The park is home to the California Shakespeare Festival that ideally suits the rustic, natural setting.

Henry W. Coe State Park is about 85 miles south of Albany and is known by residents as the Orestimba Wilderness. This sprawling forest contains 90,000 acres of ponderosa pines on rolling green hills. There is abundant wildlife at the park to photograph or observe, with an equally impressive diversity of plants and trees. There are 200 miles of trails weaving through the park where guests can hike, backpack, ride horseback, or mountain bike. Guests cannot hunt in the park but fishing is welcomed in the many waterways and ponds. The park is home to TarantulaFest, an annual festival celebrating the eight-legged furry arachnids with live music, good food, and fun activities.

Wilder Ranch State Park is out near Santa Cruz on the Pacific coast, but unfortunately, there is no campground to accommodate your Albany motorhome rental. Although there is no place to camp out, you can still enjoy a fabulous day trip to this lovely park along the water, which boasts miles of coastline, excellent hiking trails, and a wonderful historic home that now acts as a museum for the old park. The Wilder Ranch House has been fully restored to show what it once looked like in its heyday. In addition to this museum, there are marine-protected areas in the ocean and, for the brave, a network of fascinating caves to explore.

There are several state parks west of San Jose that you can put on the list of places to visit when you rent an RV in Albany, like Castle Rock State Park or Butano State Park. Big Basin Redwoods State Park is the largest park in the area, however, with 18,000 acres of forest. This gem of a park is named for its vast groves of majestic redwood trees that stretch towards the sky taller than any other trees on Earth, aside from their cousins, the Sequoia trees. Diverse wildlife calls the state park home and there are plenty of places to camp out at the park in your Albany RV rental by owner.

RV Parks to Visit

Campgrounds and RV parks are easy to come by in California, especially near large city centers, so keep an eye out for places like Tradewinds RV Park. Tradewinds has spacious campsites, a large library, and a clubhouse complete with modern amenities. Treasure Island RV Park is located in San Francisco, so walking to any of the area's top restaurants and attractions is a breeze. San Francisco RV Resort is located on the water, with a swimming pool, BBQ/picnic area, and clubhouse for guests. This place is found south of the city, giving visitors the best of both worlds.

City Sightseeing

You can opt to travel around the Bay Area with your Albany RV rental and see the different cities like San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley, or simply stay put in Albany: there is no wrong way to vacation in the area. There are plenty of restaurants, bars, breweries, and shops in the “Urban Village by the Bay”, but neighboring cities have the finest attractions worth checking out. Oracle Arena in Oakland is home to the Golden State Warriors, an NBA franchise among the league's most popular teams. The electric atmosphere is a fun place to cheer on the local team, or perhaps the opposing team should they be from your hometown.

The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most iconic landmarks on the planet and has been featured in countless Hollywood movies. This gigantic, marvelous red bridge that spans the San Francisco Bay is truly a sight to behold, from the bridge or from a distance. Alcatraz Island is another world-famous landmark in the middle of the bay, which was once an infamous prison that was said to be inescapable. Park rangers give fascinating tours about the prison, including anecdotes about some of the most notorious villains and criminals that once called it home.

The Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive are housed at the UC Berkeley in a modern looking building. There are amazing films, paintings, photographs, sculptures, and other works of art on display that the viewing public is welcome to enjoy. Obviously, there are thousands of other things to do in the Bay Area when you rent an RV in Albany, so don’t limit yourself to your immediate surroundings.
