Alamo is a community in the San Francisco East Bay area of California. It is an unincorporated and census-designated place in Contra Costa County, having been first settled by Europeans in 1797. Alamo today is a green city, with half-acre lots designated for housing situated between Walnut Creek and Danville. Alamo is home to several famous athletes from football, baseball, and the Olympics, as well as to former Metallica bass guitarist Jason Newsted.

Book an RV in Contra Costa County and you are entering a world both natural and historical. Some other cities might be of interest to visitors, such as Pittsburg which had several names (New York of the Pacific, New York Landing and finally Black Diamond) before being granted its current name. Tracy was established in 1878 after a new rail line was built from Oakland to the shoreline of San Francisco Bay in order to avoid hills and maintain a constant elevation. Pleasanton was named after a Civil War general, Alfred Pleasonton, but a Washington D.C. recording clerk spelled his name wrong, resulting in the city's current name and spelling. San Mateo was unofficially started when a stagecoach stop opened in an abandoned mission near San Mateo Creek (it became more widely recognized with the arrival of the railroad in October 1863). San Jose is the center of Silicon Valley, the famed region of computer-technology related industries. Renting an Alamo travel trailer rental is the first step in recreating some of the journeys and explorations that led to the settling of this area and understanding what it has become.

The Great Outdoors

Mount Diablo is a mountain peak and part of the Diablo Range in Contra Costa County. Visitors to the park will find restrooms and showers and a visitors center with interpretive exhibits. The park is open to the public for hiking and biking, horseback riding, and camping, but visitors should remember to dress appropriately (proper hiking shoes and layered clothing). The peak is surrounded by rolling hills and flat wide valleys, making the view memorable; on a clear day, you can see the Golden Gate Bridge.

Briones Regional Park is a secret wilderness nestled amongst the civilization of Contra Costa County. It is comprised of rolling grassy hills, secluded canyons, and stands of oak trees that provide shelter to the black-tailed deer, coyotes, and other wildlife that frequent the park. The park's scenic trails provide opportunities for hiking, biking, and horseback riding; other popular activities enjoyed in the park include kite flying, photography, and nature study (the park has a wide variety of flower species). Visitors can also picnic, either privately or at one of the picnic sites that offer tables and barbecue stands. Take your Alamo motorhome rental for a spin through the park and create your own self-guided tour.

Chabot Space & Science Center, while technically not outdoors, does provide an opportunity to learn about our planet and the universe that surrounds us. It is located in the Redwoods Regional Park and offers children and adults access to interpretive exhibits, telescopes, and so much more.

Exploring The City

There are a number of things to do and see in Alamo and the surrounding area. Visitors should start with the museums which offer a very tangible understanding of local history; one of them has an extensive collection of train artifacts and offers guided tours of the Alamo Cemetery. Another focuses on rare, classic, and unique automobiles and related artifacts such as antique gas station pumps. One historic site is the family home of an American Nobel Prize-winning author and has both guided and self-guided audio tours of the house and surrounding area. One community-based cultural arts center is both art gallery and playhouse, providing up-to-date exhibitions of local artists' work and musicals, plays, and movies for all ages. The center often has participatory workshops and classes open to the public. Don't forget to include your Alamo luxury RV rental in the foreground of your photos to show everyone back home.

Alamo has a vibrant culinary scene, with restaurants ranging from inexpensive to fine dining. Visitors will find a good selection of American-style outlets, cafes, and pub restaurants, Asian venues offering Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese menus, and much more. An American-themed restaurant has an extensive selection of appetizers, which could be combined tapas-style to create your own personal meal. Be sure to try the lamb sliders and avocado toast if you make it here. A local steakhouse specializes in petit filet and lobster and has appetizers such as sweet chili calamari. Portions are large and there is no shame in taking leftovers home to your Alamo camper rental for a late night snack or next day's lunch.
