Acton, CA, is a small western-themed residential community, whose historical buildings were first constructed back in the early 1800s. Some homes in the valley are ranches, a few of which have equestrian facilities; homes farther up in the Sierra Pelona Mountains surrounding Acton have breathtaking views of the town and valley beneath them. The size of the town is slightly less than 40 square miles.
Acton began as a railroad camp in 1873; the camp was disassembled in 1876 but, in 1887, it was founded again by two miners. The revitalized town became a center for the mines in the area that were producing gold, copper and titanium ore, and continued in this manner into the early 1900s. In the late 1880s, ranching and farming became increasingly important industries in Acton, and 1889 saw the opening of the 49er, Acton's first hotel and saloon; the 49er still exists and operates in Acton today.
Acton has several claims to fame. Nearby Parker Mountain was the venue for a former world speed record of 302 mph. Acton is also a popular location for filmmakers and the town has appeared in TV shows (Malcolm in the Middle, Sons of Anarchy, Reno 911, Falling Skies and The Big Bang Theory), music videos (Tom Petty, Metallica, Radiohead and Taylor Swift) and movies (Blood Work, Windtalkers, Terminator 3, Titanic and more). Booking an RV rental in Acton could be the chance you've been waiting for to stargaze, in more ways than one.
Acton is a non-incorporated town and part of Los Angeles County. RV rentals in Acton are the first step to exploring this early western town and the surrounding area. Other interesting venues you might want to explore include Santa Clarita, Lancaster, Oxnard, Pasadena and Santa Monica.
First-time visitors to Acton might be surprised to find vineyards and breweries, but this is California, after all. There are multiple wineries and breweries to be found in nearby Agua Dulce. At some of the wineries, guests are invited to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy a bottle of their wine with your food, picnic table provided. Or, bring your Acton luxury RV rental so you can purchase several bottles of wine, and enjoy a relaxing lunch in the cozy confines of your rental RV.
Those wishing to put some miles on their shoes, and the Acton motorhome rental, can head to Vasquez Rocks Natural Area or Barrel Springs Trail, both good hiking destinations. Barrel Springs Trail is an easy, fairly flat hike about three miles long, from the parking lot to the end and back. Vasquez Rocks is a little steeper and longer, but provides an excellent workout and great photo-ops. Hikers coming here should make sure they have proper shoes and water. Vasquez is famous (amongst Trekkies) for having appeared in an episode from the original series (see if you can guess which one). Keep your Acton rental RV nearby so you can end your hike in the lap of luxury.
If there is one must-see attraction in Acton (there are several but this one definitely takes the cake), it is the Shambala Preserve, a wildcat sanctuary housing big cats mostly from Africa and many of whom are on the endangered species list. This sanctuary was created and is largely funded by Tippi Hedren; the enclosures are very large, much larger than in a standard zoo, allowing the cats more room to wander around. The animals are well looked after, making this a very popular destination. Guests wishing to visit and take the tour should book ahead of time, as the venue is not open every weekend.
Some other outdoor sites worth checking out are Farm Sanctuary Animal Acres (rescued farm animals, not as exotic as the cats but still worth visiting), Rainbow Ridge Ranch in Palmdale (horseback riding tours) and Animal Tracks in Agua Dulce (another rescued animal sanctuary, with kangaroos, capuchin monkeys and more). Spend some time here and have a picnic lunch, and the capuchins may join you at your picnic table (just remember that it isn't a good idea to feed the animals; if in doubt, ask).
Californian RV Resort is near Palmdale. Most sites have full hookups, concrete pads, gravel or dirt patios and are pull through. The resort is quiet despite being near a highway and has a pool, spa and restrooms. The sites can be tight as they are set out on the side of a hill; RVers with mobility issues might find it difficult to get around.
Soledad Canyon RV & Camping Resort has laundry facilities, Wi-Fi, restrooms and showers, an on-site store, plus an extensive list of sports, activities and amenities. It is not far from the San Gabriel Mountains, making the view from your Acton motorhome rental memorable; the campground provides plenty of shade from cottonwood, stone pine, palm and elm trees.
Acton is small but there is a good selection of restaurants to choose from. Higher end palates will be satisfied here, and there are also various Mexican, Italian and American options available around town. Don't forget the previously mentioned 49er (hotel and bar). Check out this historic site and enjoy a bite to eat while you’re there.
There are a couple grocery stores in Acton, for those who seek a home-cooked meal. When it's time for some quiet and relaxation, grab what you need here and dine out under the stars in your RV rental near Acton, CA.
