In the heart of Arizona surrounded by national forest land, Clarkdale continues to be one of the best towns you’ve probably never heard of. Clarksdale was founded in the early 20th century by William A. Clark, a copper mine owner who set his sights on creating a mining and smelting town. As a result, the town is named for Clark and there are a few landmarks and monuments paying homage to him in the community. Although the mining and smelting operations would eventually shut down in the 1950s, Clarkdale would avoid the usual fate of abandoned mining towns due to its heavy investment in modern infrastructure.

Since it was incorporated in 1957, Clarkdale has returned to prosperity, thriving as a retirement community as well as a Bohemian enclave full of passionate artists. This incredible town has everything you could possibly want or need out of a vacation destination, and when you book an RV in Clarksdale, you'll be deeply entrenched in magnificent scenery all around you. You can absolutely find everything you need in this small Arizona town, but if you feel the need to hit the road with the Clarkdale camper rental, Flagstaff is an hour's drive to the north and Phoenix is a two-hour drive to the south.

Discover Clarkdale

Experience the Sites and Scenery

The mountainous regions of northern and central Arizona are vastly different from the flat desert lands to the south, and most first-time visitors to the state are unaware of the natural diversity in the Copper State. One of the best parts about deciding to rent an RV in Clarksdale is that you don’t really need to drive far to stumble on some stunning scenery. Dead Horse Ranch State Park is just outside of Clarksdale, and a fabulous place to start your trip. Known for its rugged hiking paths, rich riparian habitats, and incredible views, Dead Horse Ranch State Park is a pleasure to visit. There are miles of trails and hiking loops and a few campgrounds where you can park your Clarksdale RV rental too. On top of all that, the park hosts the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival each year in honor of the area’s rich assortment of wildlife species.

Red Rock State Park is another wonderful place to explore near Sedona, without having to drive too far. This glorious collection of forest groves and red rock canyons creates a startling contrast of colors that are perfect for photographing. The park is so beautiful, in fact, that it has been used as a filming location for countless western movies. There are miles of trails to explore on horseback, mountain bike, or hike on foot. The visitor center on site has a movie theater, nature exhibits, and a gift shop, and there are even pavilions where people may have weddings and other events.

Coconino National Forest is spread out over nearly two million acres of Arizona land, with vast stretches of wilderness enveloping the parks mentioned above, as well as Clarksdale itself. There are stretches of high desert, alpine tundra, and evergreen forests scattered throughout the area, and plenty of space to trek and explore. You can climb the gigantic San Francisco Peaks, a series of ancient volcanoes, or see the forest’s bristlecone pines that are some of the oldest trees on the planet. Camping is always an option in Coconino National Forest, with several campgrounds to rest in the comfort of your Clarkdale camper rental.

It goes without saying that Grand Canyon National Park is a must-see natural landmark if you have the time and energy to drive a few hours to northern Arizona. Widely considered to be one of the most recognized of all the national parks or natural features on the planet, the Grand Canyon brings in over six million people from all over each year. There are campgrounds overlooking the canyon, as well as campgrounds on the canyon floor, so choosing where to camp out in your Clarkdale motorhome rental is the hardest part of visiting this natural wonder.

Where to Park It

The last thing you’ll need to worry about when you arrive in Clarkdale is finding a place to camp overnight. The town’s location in the middle of a national forest all but assures that you’ll find a place to stay with ease. Rain Spirit RV Resort is located right in the center of town, with lots of amenities. The in-ground pool is a good way to escape the dry heat of Arizona. Rio Verde RV Park is just outside of town, with tiny houses, RV camping, and tent camping too. When you stay here, you can enjoy riverfront access and a convenience store.

Verde Valley RV & Camping Resort is a short drive south of Clarkdale and has quite a few amenities, including a clubhouse, a swimming pool, hot tubs, fishing areas, hiking trails, playgrounds, mini-golf, and much more.

City Attractions

Clarkdale is an attraction itself, with lots of interesting ways to keep busy and have fun during your stay. There are lots of wonderful restaurants and trendy boutiques in the center of town, and tons of locally owned art galleries too. Since its founding, Clarkdale has always been an artsy space and the Arizona Copper Art Museum is a great reflection of this. The museum was started by the Clark family that first settled the town and has thousands of pieces of art on display. Copper items and artifacts from all over the world and a variety of time periods can be seen in this amazing place.

The Tuzigoot National Monument sits on the edge of town and is widely visited by tourists with a love for history. The monument is essentially the ruins of a small indigenous town on a hill that was built 1,000 years ago.

The Gold King Mine & Ghost Town is a staple of the old west and a popular attraction for families and other tourists. The American West has plenty of old abandoned mining towns, and there is nothing quite like the feeling of walking through a historic town once teeming with life. The mine tour is self-guided but well laid out and full of awesome visuals. There are lots of other historic places and fun attractions to explore when you book an RV rental near Clarkdale, AZ.
