Fun and romantic RV trip ideas for couples

RVing getaways help create romantic memories by putting you in the driver’s seat of your own adventure. We at Outdoorsy are all about helping you restore your relationship with the outdoors while strengthening your relationship as a couple.

That’s why we put together these fun and romantic trip ideas for couples — so you can pick and choose the adventuring that fits you both.  And it’s no problem if you’ve never RV’d before. We’ve got RVs for rent of all types and stripes that’ll help you get rolling no matter what.

We thought it’d be swell to break down these fun and romantic trip ideas by trip type. Read on to see about things like Glamping experiences, national park extravaganzas, and the fun date ideas that’ll make each one special.

The national and/or state park adventure

National and state parks are veritable playgrounds of naturally romantic dates. You could plan an epic RV trip through places like Utah’s Mighty Five, a low-key (but still romantic) trip to a state park near you, or anything in between.

Here are some ideas to get you rolling:

Places to go

Your mileage will vary with this depending on where you’re located. That said — you could always hop a plane to a place like Kalispell, Montana, rent an RV, and roll straight into Glacier National Park for some romantic camping.

Tons of our renters do just this sort of thing. And with many of our RV owners offering airport pickup and/or campsite setup, it’s easier than ever to adventure like this in new locales.

If you opt for more of a nearcation, the chances are strong that you’ve got a national park within range. Along with unique sites, these parks typically offer an abundance of hiking, biking, watersporting, and picnicking opportunities that make for romantic dates.

State parks offer many of the same things and are generally more low-key — making them a destination of choice for natural solitude.

Dates to go on

Here are a few examples of fun and romantic adventures for this itinerary:

  • Stargazing — Hit up a spot like one of these Dark Sky Parks for romantic night sky viewing.
  • Picnics — State and national parks tend to pride themselves on creating comfy spots to hang out and share meals together. Many parks even feature picnic table pull-outs right by some of the best natural features.

  • Hiking and/or mountain biking — State and national parks have some of the most well-established trail systems on the planet. Trek forth on them with your significant other for a time of solitude, peaceful conversation, and perhaps even a picnic along the way.

Pro tip: Many of our owners offer mountain bikes as add-ons so you don’t have to pack them on the plane.
  • Water stuff — Parks often get protected because they have breathtaking water features. Check out RV rental add-ons like kayaks and stand-up paddle boards to make sure these are on lock.

Glamping adventures

Glamping (i.e. luxury camping) happens when you camp in things like yurts, geodomes, luxury treehouses, tiny homes, vintage Airstreams, or a host of other comfy camping accommodations.

As you might imagine, these are some of the most romantic getaways you can plan. Here are some ideas for a fun glamping getaway.

Glamping stays

Places to go

Glamping stays are exploding in popularity all around the country. No matter where you find yourself, the chances are strong that you can find a luxury camping adventure near you.

We put together this list of our five favorite spots for glamping and Outdoorsy Stays is our new platform that’ll soon be hosting glamping accommodations all over the place.

Some of the most popular glamping spots are areas just outside cities and right by national parks.

Dates to go on

  • Glamp-out — The beauty of glamping is that you don’t necessarily need to plan anything special. The experience itself is usually packed with romantic opportunities — even if all you do is relax on cozy furniture and enjoy s’mores by the campfire.
  • Cook a meal for your loved one — many glamping accommodations feature kitchens or kitchenettes where you can prep an easy and delicious camping meal.
  • Hammock snuggles — Most glampgrounds are going to have a hammock around. Enjoy this feature by snuggling up with your significant other.

The urban RV adventure

If you dig the idea of RVing and camping but still want to have access to big city lights — this is the romantic itinerary for you.

Places to go

You can rent an RV in an urban spot like Denver, park it at an area RV campground, and enjoy the best that the city and the mountains have to offer.

These sorts of trips abound around cities all over the U.S. because you can find your pick of RV and roll into almost any type of RV park you’d prefer.

Dates to go on

  • Photo hunt — Urban locales offer some pretty cool photo opps. Run around to catch the best selfies you can get of each other. If you want to ditch tech, snag a polaroid camera for some nostalgic (and romantic) fun.
  • Restaurant run — Foodies love cities because they offer a plethora of options for every pallet. Splurge on a nice dinner unlike anything you’d do back home.

You could even have some fancy food delivered right to your campsite if you’d prefer an intimate dinner by the campfire.
  • Landmark tour on public transit — If you’re camping near a city that has a large public transit system, it can be fun to explore cool stops along the way. Take this New York Subway tour for example where you can see epic sites in a day on trains.

The road-tripping adventure

Road trips can be one of the most romantic trip ideas because you get to enjoy each other’s company and the spaces in between.

Places to go

Check out the top road trip planning apps to help you get rolling on the best routes. We also put together these road trip guides for your reading enjoyment.

Dates to go on

  • Talk and pay attention — Sounds simple, but when you really think about it, how often is it just the two of you in one place with nowhere else to go? Drop the smartphone and really take time to connect as you roll.

  • Road Trip Bingo — This fun classic helps you or your loved one get a bingo by checking off landmarks you see along the way.
  • Roadside attractions — The road has some wild roadside attractions that’ll make for a fun date destination just about anywhere.

Boondocking adventures

Boondocking happens when you RV camp without hookups (i.e. water, electric, and sewer). This means you’ll be dependent on the capacity of your batteries and water tanks on board your RV.

Places to go

Many of our owners offer boondock-ready RVs that’ll stay self-sufficient for long periods of time. The beauty of this is that you’ll be able to reach places like national forest and BLM (Bureau of Land Management) lands for spectacular RV camping.

Check out our Ultimate Guide to Boondocking to discover more about boondocking and how to find places to camp.

Dates to go on

  • Board games — True, you could do this date on just about any sort of trip. But we happen to think that popping up a table outside your RV in a remote campground is one of the best ways to experience this old pastime.
  • Device-free date — Boondockable lands are usually radio-free zones where you can’t ping a hotspot or a cell tower even if you wanted to. Turn this into a date by spending some uninterrupted time together by the fire, on a hike, or on the water.
  • Campfire cookin’ — Get in touch with your inner caveman (or woman) by cooking a campfire meal like these

Winery/Brewery Ventures

Harvest Hosts is a network of thousands of breweries, wineries, and farmsteads that’ll welcome RVers for a free night of boondock camping.

The trade off is that guests should give some business to the campspot — a pretty easy proposition when you’re talking places like these 🙂

Places to go

Harvest Hosts features an app with an interactive map where you could plan out a whole RVing itinerary that features daily dates at some of the coolest wineries and breweries in the country.

Dates to go on

  • Picnic — Few places are better for a picnic than a nice vineyard, especially when you can get excellent wine and cheese right on site.
  • Tastings — Wine and beer tastings are one of the best ways to connect and enjoy new things. You can start in the tasting room and bring what you purchase back to the RV for sipping by the fire.
  • Walks — How often do you and yours take the time to take walks with each other? Few places are better for a relaxing walk than vineyards and farmsteads.

One last romantic RV trip idea is the staycation/nearcation. Trips like these are a great way to discover things in your own backyard that you never seem to have time for. By taking a romantic trip to new discoveries in your own area, you’ll open the door for dates you can take throughout the year.

Renting an RV for a stay or nearcation is a fun way to create some adventure that beats out the usual BNB or hotel. Date opportunities abound here and will vary depending on where you live. Many of our RV owners offer RV delivery and setup so you could pick a campsite in your area and arrive at a ready-made campsite. Delivery also saves you money because you can opt for more affordable stationary insurance

No matter which fun and romantic trip idea you choose from above — renting an RV is a great way to enjoy it. Our owners are all about helping create memories in the outdoors and can often help out with date recommendations in their area. So snuggle up with the one you love and get ready to hit the road.

Josh and his wife traveled around the country in an '88 Airstream for 4+ years of full-time RVing. They made an unexpected pitstop in Montana in 2020 and haven't left since. That's because they got hooked on the glamping resort they run by Glacier National Park. Fittingly, they keep up their RVing love by renting out vintage Airstreams and other retro RVs to travelers hitting Montana.
